For These Things I am Truly Thankful
For These Things I am Truly Thankful is dedicated to Adam Greene, who I worked with at my last job. He once worked at a grocery store – and he wrote a journal about it. That journal gave away secrets that no one who actually eats food should know, and it led me down a very strange road of obsession and compulsive behavior to write this story. It first appeared in the anthology Haunted Holidays, and it’s been a favorite of my readers ever since.
When I was writing this story, I had some moments. I didn’t know what a can of worms I was opening. You really can’t think about the things that begin to obsess my protagonist…not too often, and not for too long. When you drink water, you don’t think about the inside of the spigot, the pipes that attach to it, the dirty hands of the plumber who originally installed it, the things that might fall, pour, leak and / or insinuate themselves into the supply, or the people who might have the flu, or mono, who work at the plant that feeds it to those filthy pipes. You just don’t…but if you do, you may find it difficult to it over ice and enjoy it - or bathe in it. Ice might look cloudy and gross. Just saying…
